Five Leadership Lessons From FBI Interrogator Keynote at Spark Talent

A former FBI agent distilled high-stakes interrogation experience into practical leadership principles for HR audiences.

At the Spark Talent conference, former FBI Special Agent George Piro closed the event with a keynote drawing leadership lessons from his seven-month interrogation of Saddam Hussein. Piro offered five takeaways relevant to HR and people managers: preparation beats instinct under pressure; emotional intelligence, defined as trust combined with credibility and consistency, drives influence more effectively than authority; strong leaders balance warmth and competence situationally; understanding individual motivators (reward, fear, ideology, or ego) should shape management approaches; and active listening means absorbing context rather than formulating replies. Piro framed these as universal principles applicable to team leadership, performance conversations, and organizational influence.
