HR Leaders Urged to Replace Change Management With Continuous Agility

Traditional change playbooks are failing because overload, not resistance, drives employee friction.

At the SPARK TALENT conference, Kristen Stamilio, formerly of Microsoft, argued that organizations must abandon project-based change management in favor of embedded organizational agility. Drawing on Microsoft employee listening data and her 23-year HR career, Stamilio said friction during technology rollouts stems from capacity overload, not employee resistance. She outlined four pillars for building continuous agility: fostering psychological safety and experimentation, having leaders model vulnerability and maintain explicit stop-doing lists, shortening planning cycles to four-to-six week sprints, and simplifying governance by focusing decision rights on clear ownership rather than complex accountability frameworks. HR leaders, she contended, should treat adaptability as an ongoing operational capability rather than a milestone.
